CODE OF ETHICS

One of the primary goals of The National Hypnosis Association is to promote hypnosis as a dignified and credible profession. The Code of Ethics is in place to provide a system of principles and regulations intended to govern the professional conduct of the members.

Members must respect their client’s rights and dignity, practice social responsibility, and maintain professional integrity.

Members will not discriminate because of race, age, color, religion, sex, or national ancestry.

Members agree that intimate social contact with clients is forbidden and keep a strict moral and ethical code.

Members recognize and are forthright about both the benefits and the limitations of clinical hypnosis.

Members practice hypnosis within the recognized knowledge and competence of the profession.

Members must take the client’s physical and mental well-being into account and regard the welfare of the individual or group served as a primary consideration.

Members must give precedence to professional responsibility over personal interests.

Members respect the privacy of the people they serve and are responsible with the information acquired.

Members keep client information confidential, except when required by law, or with the client’s written consent prior to release of confidential information.

Members respect the rights, desires, and needs clients at all times.

When working with a client in an area which cannot be proved or disproved (example: regression) the client should be informed that this is an area where inaccurate perceptions are possible and that information gleaned may or may not be valid.

Members shall not, under any circumstances, diagnose or offer cures for any conditions. Members do not make claims that hypnosis or hypnotherapy is a cure.  

Members must not attempt to treat medical disorders, unless they are a trained medical professional. Any client with a medical problem must be advised to seek proper professional medical treatment. Members shall under no circumstances advise clients to discontinue treatment as prescribed by a licensed medical professional. 

Members recognize the need for psychological and medical referrals to other professionals.

Members shall use hypnosis strictly within the limits of their training and competence and in conformity to the laws of their state.

Members recognize that the practice of hypnosis for medical or diagnosable mental ailments should only be performed only by those members who are qualified to do so by virtue of their education and/or state licensure, and adhere to state laws and regulations.

Members must obey all laws and regulations regarding hypnosis in the jurisdictions in which they practice.

Members support the principle that professional practice requires professional education.

Members shall use hypnosis only within the limits of their training and competence.

Members must accurately represent their educational background and title. Members shall not claim to have qualifications or credentials that are unearned or use designated letters to which they are not entitled. The title "Dr." shall not be used unless it has been earned via a credentialed medical or educational institution.  Use of non-academic titles and degrees is unethical. A member may not use any letter designation after his/her name which implies a degree or license, unless the member has such an academic degree or license awarded by an accredited academic institution or state licensing board. Certifications and memberships must be accurately represented and maintained in order to claim linkage to such organization. 
 


The National Hypnosis Association members agree to the above code of ethics when applying for membership. Any member found to be in violation will be investigated and membership will be revoked if deemed necessary.
